President’s Day: Hillary
Clinton Endorsed for President
Madam President &
The First Gentleman Launched
Des Moines, IOWA
– For President’s Day, American Women Presidents today endorsed New
York’s Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton for president in 2008 and
launched Madam President & The First Gentleman, two new political
action committees for the 2008 presidential campaign.
“We endorse Hillary
Rodham Clinton for President of the United States,” said Mosemarie
Boyd, head of American Women Presidents, during a speech at Drake
University in Des Moines, Iowa. “On January 20, 2009, Hillary Clinton
will be sworn in as President of the United States, and former
president Bill Clinton will become America’s First Gentleman. We
need America’s greatest leaders back in The White House and, as you
know, many people miss Bill.
“Women have been
running for the U.S. presidency since 1870,” said Boyd. “After 135
years, it’s time. Make your hotel reservations now for January
19-20, 2009 to be part of history. For a preview of Madam President
& The First Gentleman, visit www.Madam-President.org.
American Women
Presidents also endorsed Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice as a
Republican presidential candidate for 2008, and suggested that Dr.
Rice is more likely to become the first Republican vice-presidential
nominee in 2008 because she has not yet run for elected office.
As it does every
election, American Women Presidents will also endorse the Democratic and
Republican women running for U.S. Senate and governor—positions in
the pipeline to the presidency—in 2006, including Sen. Hillary
Rodham Clinton for re-election in New York.
“After 135 Years,
It’s Time to Elect a Woman to the U.S. Presidency,” the President’s
Day event sponsored by American Women Presidents, Drake Women’s
Studies Program, Drake Young Democrats and Drake Young Republicans,
took place at 12:00 Noon in Cowles Library Reading Room on the Drake
University campus in Des Moines, Iowa.
Early women to run for
president included: New York’s Victoria Woodhull (first woman stock
broker) in 1870, Belva Lockwood (first woman attorney before U.S.
Supreme Court) in 1884, Republican Sen. Margaret Chase Smith in
1964, Democratic Cong. Shirley Chisholm in 1972. For more, see

HILLARY'S TOP PRIORITY REMAINS PATRIOTISM NOT PARTISANSHIP
Lessons
for Our Friend Ken Mehlman
Little
Rock
– Working to elect Democratic and Republican women to the
U.S. presidency, American Women Presidents today praised Sen.
Hillary Clinton for making patriotism and not partisanship her
top priority in government and politics, and suggested that RNC
Chairman Ken Mehlman might benefit from doing the same.
“Our
friend Ken Mehlman is a nice guy who usually has his priorities
straight when it comes to putting patriotism ahead of
partisanship," said Mosemarie Boyd, head of American Women
Presidents. "That said his vicious partisan attack on former
First Lady Hillary Clinton resembles that of a bully.
“Americans know that Sen. Hillary Clinton has continuously made
patriotism her top priority,”
said Boyd. “Hillary has
demonstrated moderate leadership for decades, even when others
in both parties did not. Hillary focused on increasing
adoptions way back in the 1970s. Hillary fought for better body
armor for our troops in Iraq even before some admitted there was
a need. And Hillary wants to increase our troop strength at
home and abroad to win peace in the war on terrorism around the
globe.
“Just
because the RNC can't find someone who can run against Hillary
on issues of what's best for America doesn't mean that its
representatives should give aid and comfort to our enemies by
engaging in partisan attacks,”
Boyd said. During challenging
times, we don't need more of the same old, same old. We need to
work together to find practical solutions to global challenges.
And, Mr. Mehlman's comments notwithstanding, Hillary Clinton
will be sworn-in as President of the United States on January
20, 2009 to do just that. After 135 years, it's time to elect a
woman to the U.S. presidency.
Founded
in 2000, American Women Presidents is a national political
action committee dedicated to electing women to the U.S.
presidency. Since 2000, the PAC has endorsed and contributed to
all Republican and Democratic women running for U.S. Senate and
governor--positions in the pipeline to the presidency.
The group
has worked to recruit Democratic and Republican women to run for
the presidency, including Sen. Hillary Clinton, Sen. Kay Bailey
Hutchison, and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, and endorsed
Republican and Democratic women as potential vice presidential
nominees, including Sen. Hillary Clinton and now Secretary of
State Condoleezza Rice in 2004 and former presidential hopeful
Elizabeth Dole and Sen. Dianne Feinstin in 2000.
